City staff and community partners presented a proposed calendar of events to mark America’s 250th anniversary and asked the council to confirm support for a $10,000 request from the hotel/motel fund.
Organizers proposed focusing events between Memorial Day and Veterans Day to align with existing military tribute banners and to use the extended window to enhance existing events and add new initiatives — including seasonal red-and-white plantings in Uptown, light projections, bunting near the depot, a flag-retirement ceremony with the American Legion, an appearance by Iowa’s Military Veterans Band for Flag Day, and a 250th-themed photo opportunity for fireworks and other celebrations.
Staff said the plan would use the Marion Messenger and city social channels for publicity and requested council alignment on the concept and the $10,000 hotel/motel fund ask to support programming and communications. Council directed staff to publish an overview of planned activities and to continue partnering with community groups for implementation.
