Bill expands eligibility for intergenerational care grant program and advances unanimously

The Legislature advanced LB721, legislation that refines the intergenerational care facility incentive grant program to allow nursing homes and assisted living facilities to apply for grant funds to expand shared childcare and elder-care programming.
Senator Quick said the bill addresses two obstacles that had kept available funds from being used: statutory restrictions that limited grants to start-up costs and administrative rules that had excluded for-profit facilities. Committee amendment AM1786 permits existing intergenerational facilities to apply for expansion grants and adds a restriction that prevents repeat grantees from reapplying if they have previously received the grant. The HHS committee advanced the bill 7-0 and the committee amendment was adopted on the floor; LB721 then advanced to E & R for engrossing with unanimous recorded support.
Supporters described intergenerational programs as an efficient model to address both childcare and elder-care needs while improving staff retention and sharing facility infrastructure.
