Staff reported they had reached out to Mariah Davis in the Tourism & Festivals Department, which has authority over the cabin. According to the update, ADA compliance is a nationwide concern for historic sites and "the minimum amount of things that need to happen are a ramp to the doorway," though full accessible access to upper levels is not always required. Commission members were told the cabin’s foundation and the adopted 2026 budget make relocation or major structural upgrades unlikely in the near term.
Members discussed options for providing access, including obtaining bids, using a portable ramp for events, or procuring a custom ramp; a parks director’s assessment suggested the site likely cannot meet full city ADA standards without significant work. Given those constraints, commissioners discussed building a virtual museum and digital interpretation as an interim step to preserve and present the cabin’s history to the public.
Staff also noted that volunteer services have requested an updated volunteer position description before volunteers are assigned to work in the cabin for cleanup and programming. Members agreed to coordinate among Tourism & Festivals, Volunteer Services and Parks to complete the position description and to plan cleanup and interpretation work when approvals are secured.
The commission did not make a binding decision to move the cabin or commit capital funds during the meeting; next steps are drafting the volunteer description and coordinating on access options with the appropriate city departments.
