Planning commission recommends renewal for U-Haul site at 1650 SW Market Street

The Lee's Summit Planning Commission on Dec. 11 recommended approval of a 10‑year special use permit renewal for a U‑Haul storage, rental and RV service operation at 1650 Southwest Market Street.

Adair Bright, senior planner, told the commission staff entered exhibits 1–15 into the record and that the site inspection found several maintenance items — faded parking stall striping, debris in a detention basin and patches needed in the driveway and parking lot. Bright said the applicant has addressed many concerns and staff added a condition that required parking‑lot and driveway repairs be completed by Aug. 28, 2026, after the city receives the contractor contract and schedule.

Applicant Jackie Thawne said the business is family‑operated and has been in the community for more than 30 years and asked the commission to approve the renewal. Commissioners asked how the city would follow up on the condition; Bright said staff will perform inspections and that failure to complete the work could trigger revocation or amendment of the permit conditions.

With no members of the public asking to speak on the application, a commissioner moved to recommend approval. A roll call vote recorded affirmative votes from the commissioners present and the motion passed.

The commission’s recommendation goes to city council for final action; the renewal includes the staff conditions described on the record.
