Gates County schedules emergency meeting after main well output falls sharply

Summary
County staff reported a primary well’s production fell from roughly 680 gallons per minute to about 280 gpm, the contractor accepted responsibility for a casing issue, and commissioners discussed an emergency meeting to authorize immediate repairs or new drilling.
County staff and commissioners described an urgent drop in the county's main well production and discussed immediate options to secure drinking water supply.
Speaker 8 said the well’s measured output fell from about 680 gallons per minute to around 280 gpm and that contractors have accepted responsibility for problems with casing installation. The county has applied for a permit to increase permitted production to 500 gpm and is evaluating drilling additional wells and land/buffer constraints. "We were able to produce, 280, gallons a minute on the twelfth," a speaker reported during the session.
Commissioners discussed whether the planning-session format was sufficient to act or whether they needed a formal emergency meeting. Several members proposed calling a special or emergency meeting within days to authorize repairs and to consider land needs for new well placement; staff indicated they could post and notify commissioners quickly and that some members were available for an emergency call.
The discussion also referenced related capital projects: a community center estimated at about $4.8 million and transmission projects (tens of thousands of linear feet of piping) tied to the county’s water-infrastructure plan.
Next steps: staff said they will pursue preapproval for site work, coordinate with contractors and, if necessary, arrange a special meeting to authorize emergency procurement or drilling.
