Gates County sets nine‑member Animal Advisory Board and appoints five initial members

The Gates County Board of Commissioners voted to cap a newly formed Animal Advisory Board at nine seats and accepted five nominees to serve on the board.

Commission discussion considered options including a seven‑member board with an alternate versus a nine‑member board to allow broader geographic and stakeholder representation. Vice chair proposed the nine‑seat cap, saying it would provide an odd number for voting while accommodating the current volume of applicants.

“I make a motion that we keep the, that we cap the board at 9 seats,” a commissioner said; the motion was seconded and the board approved it unanimously. The board then made and approved a motion to accept all five applicants submitted that evening.

Commissioners said they welcomed strong volunteer interest and noted the cap will leave one vacancy if all five proposed appointments are confirmed; staff will continue processing applications and will provide information about vacancies and alternates as needed.

The board’s action establishes the advisory board’s size and fills initial seats; appointment details and member names will be recorded in the clerk’s office and shared publicly in minutes.
