Supervisor board forwards Center Elite Gymnastics zoning request to planning commission

HARRIS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Owners of Center Elite Gymnastics asked the Harris Township Board of Supervisors on Aug. 12 to amend the township's general industrial zoning district to allow indoor recreation, a request the board forwarded to the planning commission for further study.
Mike Degra, who introduced the request on behalf of Center Elite, said the club needs a new home after losing its lease and is proposing a 29,050‑square‑foot facility on about 2.5 acres at Bowlesburg Technology Park. Owner Tracy Salvino Longenecker said the business employs roughly 35 people and hosts competitions that attract families to the Center Region.
Supervisors used the hearing to flag issues for the planning commission, including traffic and parking: board members noted the site sketch showed 65 regular spaces with overflow available, while the applicant said the program could require about 97 spaces at peak events. Questions also included whether allowing indoor recreation in the industrial condominium might invite future uses the township would not want and whether a minimum square‑foot threshold should be required.
A motion to forward the amendment to the planning commission for review and recommendation passed unanimously. The planning commission will address the requested zoning change at its next meeting and the applicant was invited to attend.
