Township tests radar speed signs to collect traffic data and calm speeds

The devices (All Traffic Solutions) were deployed temporarily to gather baseline speed and volume information. Staff said the signs can collect photos in some events, show a driver’s speed to motorists and produce reports that classify vehicles by risk (low/medium/high) and measure the percent of vehicles that slow when the sign is active.
"This is not an enforcement tool," staff emphasized. "It allows us to get a good understanding of how many vehicles are traveling on the roadway, how fast they're going…and the effectiveness of the signs when they're turned on to get people to slow down."
Board members and residents discussed ideal sign placement (for example, at the crest of a hill on Bolsberg Pike), the limits of photo capture for enforcement, and potential rotation of units to gather data across multiple locations. Staff noted other municipalities use third‑party services or permanent installations for longer‑term traffic calming; the township will continue to rotate and evaluate placements.
