Mayor Searcy read the resolution calling on residents to leave an outdoor light on, use reflective costumes or flashlights, travel in groups or with an adult, inspect candy before eating and for drivers to slow down on neighborhood streets. The measure was moved and seconded by council members and approved by the council during the meeting.
The resolution ties into the city’s stated priorities for safety and belonging and was presented at a brief ceremonial portion of the meeting that also recognized children who participated in the city’s Monster Bash. The council invited children who won costume and literary awards to the dais before voting on the measure.
After the reading, the council took a voice vote and members indicated their support. Council members encouraged residents to take precautions and to enjoy the holiday safely.
The council did not attach new enforcement measures to the resolution; it serves as guidance and a public-safety reminder timed to trick-or-treat activities. The mayor and council members also encouraged neighbors and drivers to be mindful of increased pedestrian activity on neighborhood streets.
The council moved on with the rest of its agenda after brief photos and recognition of the costume contest winners.
