Maunalua Bay dredging finishes beach replenishment; project scope expanded from initial plan, officials say

A DOBAR representative said the project originally focused on harbor dredging but expanded to include beach replenishment and bulkhead work. "They dredged the channel, and they took that sand...The sand was originally all from that area. So they took this sand, and they replenished the beach," the representative said, adding that the sand proved to be fine, beach‑quality material.
Project documentation supplied to the board lists an original allocation of about $6,500,000; the representative said the scope grew beyond that original plan, which accounts for media reports of cost increases. Work included dredging the navigation channel and placing fill to rebuild shoreline beaches and add a retaining bulkhead to keep sand in place.
Board members asked whether the new sand would create additional recreational beach areas and whether landscaping would be included. Project staff said the sand restored previously eroded areas and created more usable beach near existing amenities; some future landscaping and parking/parking‑lot repaving were discussed as possible phase‑2 items.
The representative said the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of next February and provided a project web page and engineer contact for technical questions. Neighbors were encouraged to consult the posted materials and to contact project staff if they observe issues during completion.
