Hawaii Life Flight opens Oʻahu helicopter base, board votes to send letter urging faster city approvals

Brent, regional director for Hawaii Life Flight, told the neighborhood board that the company opened a rotor base at Honolulu Airport in November to speed transfers from outer‑island and remote Oʻahu hospitals to trauma and specialty centers. He emphasized time‑sensitive conditions such as stroke, cardiac events and trauma and said a helicopter flight from Kahuku to downtown Honolulu can take about seven minutes versus a much longer ground transfer.

Hawaii Life Flight currently operates primarily on hospital‑requested transfers while it works with city and county EMS and agencies to establish direct 911 response workflows and identify safe landing zones across the island. Brent said hospitals are the primary callers today but the company is pursuing relationships that would allow first responders to request helicopter support for certain time‑sensitive emergencies.

Board members asked about consumer cost, indigent care and whether hospitals have capacity to accept additional air‑transferred patients. Brent cited the No Surprise Billing Act as a market change that has improved billing negotiation and said the company also offers a membership program (stated in the presentation as approximately $89) that covers household out‑of‑pocket costs regardless of insurance. He also said Hawaii Life Flight participates in an accreditation program that requires services not to ask about insurance prior to emergent transports.

The board voted to send a letter of support to the city’s Director of Emergency Services (Dr. Ireland) urging the administration to expedite negotiations and workflows that would allow broader medevac integration with 911 response. Brent thanked the board and asked for assistance identifying safe landing sites and local advocacy to speed city processes.
