Scottsdale staff preview corridor and trail projects, schedule and spring events

Senior transportation planner Greg Davies briefed the commission on project highlights and upcoming events on Feb. 19.

Key items: preliminary 2nd Street corridor concepts to improve pedestrian and bicycle accommodations while retaining some parking (design ~15%); a phased Cactus Veil trail refresh (phase 1: 96th–102nd; phase 2: 102nd–Frank Lloyd Wright); design nearing completion for sidewalks on 68th Street from Indian School to Camelback with construction scheduled to begin in December 2026; continued Indian Bend Wash path renovations and recent completed segments north and south of Osborne; dirt-road paving in Pinnacle Peak Ranchos; and Pima Road corridor improvements coordinated with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community that include widening to four lanes with sidewalks, bike lanes and signal upgrades.

Davies also previewed April active-transportation events including Cycle the Arts (20th anniversary) and Bike to Work Day.

Commissioners asked about parking-protection designs for bike lanes on 2nd Street (staff said the corridor is constrained and a buffered bike-lane alternative or loss of some parking are possible trade-offs and that a planned garage could mitigate removed parking). Commissioners also raised concerns about confusing detours during Pima Road construction that affect cyclists; staff acknowledged the detour issues and agreed to prioritize clearer bikeway detours when possible.

No formal action was taken; commissioners provided feedback for project teams to consider as designs proceed.
