The Sycamore board on Oct. 29 moved forward on a transition from OSBA to NEOLA policy language and approved a set of NEOLA‑aligned policies, including a comprehensive nondiscrimination/anti‑harassment policy.
The policy presenter explained the transition plan: the district reviewed 53 policies in the 3,000 professional‑staff section, referred five items back to committee for deeper review (including job descriptions, freedom of speech in non‑instructional settings, threatening behavior and sick‑leave language), and scheduled a later consolidated adoption of the full manual. For the policies before the board at the third read, the presenter described required reporting timelines and the district's decision to name two compliance officers (a male and female) to oversee investigations and ensure an appeals layer.
Board members asked how specific notices—such as a weapons‑carry notice for staff including school resource officers—would be shared with the community; administration said the notices would be embedded in student and staff handbooks and that NEOLA provides checklist language the district can adapt. On sick leave and leave to work at community (charter) schools, administration said language was adjusted to align with collective‑bargaining agreements and relevant administrative rules.
The board motioned and voted to approve the policies that were advanced for third read (roll call recorded; all Aye). Administration said it will follow with administrative guidelines and training sessions for administrators and investigators.
