Board approves curriculum and policy updates; one board member objects to phone storage policy

The Joliet Township High School District 204 Board of Education voted on a set of curriculum and policy items at its Feb. 5 meeting, approving course changes, weighted grading adjustments and multiple policy second readings while a member registered a dissent on the phone‑policy item.

Course and grading changes: The board approved a course revision converting probability and statistics into a transitional math offering and approved weighted grades intended to keep students competitive with peer schools. Committee representatives said the math team will prepare the transitional class over the summer for implementation next year.

Policy second readings: The board approved second readings of policy 2240 (curriculum content) and policy 7270 (administration of medicine at schools) without substantive further discussion.

Student‑device policy dissent: On policy 7190 (student behavior: electronic equipment), the policy language included a recommendation for classroom holders/cubbies where students would store phones. Most board members voted to approve the policy; Mister Coffey voted "No," saying, "As discussed in the previous meetings, I think it's wrong timing, wrong message." The vote passed by roll call.

Personnel items: The board approved grouped personnel items and a separate professional change‑of‑status item; a roll call on that line item showed at least one member voting against a particular change of status.

Board process: Board members asked clarifying questions about practical implementation of the phone holders and about curriculum content selection. The board approved the matters on the agenda and will proceed with implementing course and policy changes for the coming school year.
