Board awards $1.668 million in French Meadows forest‑health contracts; approves budget amendment

Placer County authorized two contracts Aug. 19 covering mechanical thinning, mastication and meadow restoration as part of the French Meadows Restoration Project. Staff said the awards—$1,504,950 to Acres Land Management LLC for mechanical thinning and meadow restoration and $163,750 to McKellar Tree Service and Logging Inc. for mastication—total $1,668,700 and are funded through previously accepted grants (including Sierra Nevada Conservancy funds), a regional fire grant and other project sources; staff said there is no general‑fund impact.
Regional forest‑health coordinator Carrie Timmer explained the treatments reduce wildfire risk around the French Meadows Reservoir, an important water source for county residents, and described procurement steps and vendor selection. Public commenters asked about oversight and disposition of removed wood; staff said timber and biomass have been sold when feasible (to a local mill and biomass buyers) and that a registered professional forester is on site daily to ensure contractors remove only marked trees and meet specifications. The board approved the contract awards, associated spending authority and a fiscal‑year budget amendment.
