Library staff told the Library Advisory Commission on Aug. 18 that the Murrieta Public Library expansion has reached a contract-selection milestone: eight construction bids were received on July 21 and the selected bid will be presented to the City Council the next day for contract approval.
"We received 8 bids back, on July 21, and we are going to city council tomorrow, with the selected bid for the approval of the contract," a staff member said, adding that staff anticipate breaking ground in September if the City Council approves the contract.
Staff outlined fundraising and outreach efforts to support the project: 13 outreach booths, 10 community presentations, social-media campaigns, school coin drives, and direct solicitations. Reported fundraising commitments include a $135,000 pledge from the Murrieta Public Library Foundation, $103,400 from the Friends of the Library plus an additional $12,500 for the opening-day collection, $110,000 from various water districts, and $40,000 in pending private commitments — totaling $388,400 in commitments to date.
When asked about the overall funding goal, staff said the project is "short $900,000" relative to current construction costs and that they are pursuing other funding avenues and evaluating options for furniture, fixtures and equipment.
The commission received the update; staff asked commissioners and the public to continue fundraising support while staff pursue City Council approval and next steps on construction scheduling.
