Residents and nonprofits thank Gilpin County and back Dark Sky support

Speakers during the public-comment period at the Gilpin County commissioners' meeting on Feb. 10 praised county support for local youth services and conservation efforts.
Steven Lefebvre, executive director of TeenZinc in Nederland, thanked the commissioners for their ongoing support of the nonprofit and told the board that about a third of TeenZinc's youth served come from Gilpin County. Lefebvre said TeenZinc is pursuing an early childhood education center in Nederland and that the program currently has nearly 60 people on a wait list.
"Overall, about a third of the youth we serve are from Gilpin County," Lefebvre said during public comment.
Resident Bill Merline thanked staff member Jamie Boyle and others for preparing a letter of support for Golden Gate State Park's application to Dark Sky International, urged the county to keep or strengthen the county's outdoor lighting regulations during upcoming Land Use Code updates, and described artificial light at night as a human health and environmental concern.
"The letter is particularly well written covering the most important points of the topic," Merline said.
The board acknowledged the comments and the staff work on the letter. The consent agenda later adopted by the board included the letter of support for Golden Gate State Park.
