Deputy Chief Josh Gessner reported to the Village of Machesney Park board on Feb. 9 that Deputy Testado received the department's Deputy of the Year award after a series of enforcement actions that included a weapon recovery tied to an attempted murder.
Gessner told trustees that Testado completed 291 traffic stops, made 13 DUI arrests and handled 82 criminal complaints during the evaluation period. Gessner said that during one traffic stop at Men’s Drive, shots were heard; Testado pursued the suspicion, took a suspect into custody and recovered a firearm that investigators later determined had been used in an attempted murder. According to Gessner, the subject was convicted later in the related criminal case.
Gessner credited Testado's situational awareness on routine patrol: "What he did best though was he was on a traffic stop... he got the guy in custody, recovered a gun, and that gun was used in an attempted murder." The board acknowledged the report and the award; no policy actions were taken based on the report.
