Millie Lauder was presented the 2025 Family Resource/Youth Service Center Best Partner award for running a long-standing weekend backpack program that organizers estimate delivered about 24,000 food bags to more than 600 East Heights students over the years.

HENDERSON COUNTY — The Henderson County Board of Education on Feb. 16 honored Millie Lauder for decades of service supporting East Heights Elementary families through a weekend backpack food program.

Melissa Walker, East Heights family resource coordinator, presented Millie with the 2025 Family Resource/Youth Service Center 'Barrier-Breaker' Best Partner award, noting Millie's 36 years in education and more than 20 years leading the backpack initiative. Walker told the board that the program has served more than 600 students and delivered an estimated 24,000 food bags over time. "For many of our students, receiving a food bag provides a profound sense of security and the quiet reassurance that they are loved rather than judged," Walker said.

Past principals and colleagues described Millie's mentorship, generosity and sustained hands-on work—shopping, packing and delivering food in all weather—and credited her with helping students move from novice to proficient on state assessments. Millie accepted the recognition modestly and said the work was done with many great people supporting her.

The board invited past and present staff to join Millie for a photo and public thanks. Organizers said the award was presented at the state conference in Lexington and highlighted as a legacy of service to the East Heights community.
