Council clears consent agenda and approves multiple city purchases and demolition work

The Hibbing City Council approved a multi-item consent agenda on Oct. 22 and separately handled several procurement and infrastructure items. The consent agenda included payroll approvals for the pay periods ending Oct. 3 ($628,134.62) and Oct. 17 ($662,934.64), updates to public works job descriptions, multiple raffle and parade permits, and a $21,000 professional-services agreement with Hahlberg Engineering for a building heating system study.
Separately, the council approved several purchases and contracts: City Engineer Storey received authorization to buy 1,200 tons of deicing salt for $87.95 per ton (total $105,576) for the 2026 winter; he said the city budgeted $132,000 in the 2026 preliminary budget and plans to use more brine and less sand this winter. Storey also gained approval to purchase a snowblower attachment for the cemetery skid steer for $12,250, and to use surplus auction funds for an $8,650 storage container to house equipment displaced by a leaking roof at the Stuntz Building.
Building Official Pat Green presented quotes to remove municipal solid waste and universal waste from the former Sullivan Warehouse and to demolish the structure because it has become a hazardous condition. The council approved the recommended vendors on the record: a waste removal quote of $24,400 and a demolition quote of $62,400, while staff will complete environmental asbestos inspections and follow MPCA guidance before full demolition work proceeds.
Other routine approvals included hiring and temporary-recreation staffing approvals indicated in the consent packet. The meeting closed with a motion to adjourn that carried.
