Commission expands pollinator corridor plans, readies 300 plant kits and volunteer events

Commission members reported progress on the Pollinator Corridor and downtown food-forest projects and outlined a timeline for volunteer planting and a native-plant-kit giveaway.

Ned Dorf and others said the Pollinator Corridor will again partner with the Botanical Gardens for planting at five sites this year, with community volunteer events planned mostly on Thursdays in June and one into July. The work group plans to run a native-plant kit giveaway and said it currently has 300 kits available; the original grant funded 100 kits, so organizers will stretch funding and seek vendor partnerships for signage and distribution.

The commission heard that the Bay Area Bird Club has donated proceeds from its birdathon to enhance the corridor, and planners expect to notify plant-kit winners via email on Earth Day (April 22) with pickup around Memorial Day weekend. Work-group members also described fundraising and grant applications to expand an existing food forest at the Fox River Trailhead, with an estimated addition of 8–10 trees plus native shrubs and plantings.

Commissioners encouraged community organizations, including neighborhood associations, museums and schools, to sign up for the corridor and noted that mapping and registration are being coordinated with the conservation corps and city staff. The update was received and placed on file as part of the packet motions.

The commission did not vote on new funding at the meeting; staff and volunteers will finalize planting dates and a public launch in the coming weeks.
