Green Bay sustainability panel to use state food-waste data to design local pilot

The Green Bay Sustainability Commission on Tuesday received an update from its waste-reduction work group and said it will use a recent Wisconsin food-waste evaluation to shape a local pilot program. The report from the state Department of Natural Resources and consultant HDR provides new data on the quantity and sources of food waste statewide, work-group members said.
Commission member Marissa Michael Cabbage and colleagues said they plan to recruit partners for the pilot that include community organizations and institutions already mentioned in the packet: Rooted In (a food-recovery organization), Valentine Gardens (an urban farm), the Green Bay Area Public School District, UW–Green Bay and NWTC, and several grocery retailers. The group is also seeking a public-works contact from the city to advise on operational aspects.
“We attended the Wisconsin food waste evaluation results webinar,” the work-group representative said, and added the state report will inform data-driven choices for a locally tailored pilot. The commission heard that the group has begun conversations with local food processors and retailers and will continue to grow membership to include residents and municipal staff.
The commission did not take formal action on a pilot at the meeting. The work-group report was later received and placed on file as part of the packet motions.
Next steps identified in the meeting materials include using the DNR/HDR report as the technical basis for the pilot design and formally inviting the named partners and city staff to participate in upcoming planning. The commission plans to track the group's progress in future monthly packets.
