Commissioners approve $217,744 transfer to fund newly budgeted positions

The Newton County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 17 to transfer $217,744 from contingency to departmental budgets to fund newly budgeted FY26 positions, including maintenance, custodial, accounting, human-resources and recreation roles.
Finance Director Britney White said the total salary and benefits for the positions equals $217,744 and that the contingency line was set aside in the FY26 budget for this purpose. She explained the county moves only the amount needed for the remainder of the fiscal year after the positions are posted.
Commissioner Mason asked that future presentations highlight which SPLOST projects remain active so residents can see ongoing investments; Commissioner Edwards questioned whether newly funded positions requested earlier were the cause of higher expenditures compared with last year. White said expenditures were about 5% higher year-to-year and clarified how fund-balance accounting works, including a $6.5 million transfer into the public-works SPLOST that affected the FY25 fund-balance calculation.
The board approved the budget transfer by voice vote. Commissioners also discussed that other positions on the spreadsheet will come forward at later meetings when funds are needed.
