Montgomery Township adopts amendment to police pension plan removing service increment for recent hires

The Montgomery Township Board of Supervisors voted to adopt Ordinance 25-349 amending the township police pension plan to eliminate a service increment for officers hired after Jan. 1, 2021, and to add an early-retirement benefit for officers with 20 years or more of service.

Township staff member Carolyn McCreery presented the change, saying it was identified during a review of the police collective bargaining agreement with the plan actuary. McCreery said, "The change eliminates the service increment for officers hired after 01/01/2021 and adds an early retirement benefit for those officers with 20 years or more of service who terminate their employment prior to their normal retirement date." The amendment was advertised in the township packet and on May 3 before the vote.

A board member moved to adopt the ordinance and another member seconded; the board approved the motion by voice vote. The ordinance was described to ensure the written plan document mirrors provisions already negotiated in the collective bargaining agreement. McCreery said the normal retirement age referenced in the plan is age 50 with 25 years of service.
