Montgomery Township adopts zoning amendments to guide electric-vehicle charging and battery storage

The board opened a public hearing on Ordinance 25-348 to amend Chapter 230, Article 21, adding standards and definitions for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, energy storage systems and storage of EV batteries. Solicitor presented five exhibits (ordinance, proof of legal notice, law library submission, county planning submission and township planning commission review). There were no public speakers on the ordinance.
Township staff said the amendment reflects recommendations of the fire chief and zoning officer, and both the Montgomery County Planning Commission and the Montgomery Township Planning Commission reviewed the draft. With no public objection, the board moved to adopt Ordinance 25-348 as advertised and presented; the public hearing was adjourned and the board voted on the ordinance in open session.
The ordinance establishes installation guidance, updates definitions and provides standards for battery and energy-storage systems in commercial and other zones. Staff will now proceed with implementation steps tied to permitting and plan review procedures under the new code language.
