Council previews code amendment to standardize use of Takoma Park seal and logo

City staff presented a draft code amendment to establish a consistent process for use of the Takoma Park seal and city logos. The proposal would require event organizers and partners to indicate at the front end of the permit or event request whether they plan to use the city logo; communications staff would review requests for approval under the new administrative process.

Staff said the clarification is intended to protect official city emblems and to ensure consistent, appropriate uses for flyers and promotional materials. The draft would apply to sub‑logos, including variations used by city departments such as the police department, and would require subcontractors and contracted partners to submit the same review form so the city can determine whether use is permitted.

Councilmembers asked whether news organizations would need permission to include the city logo in reporting, whether the city flag and logo are copyrighted, and whether the communications director would have a designee for approvals. Staff said they would consult with the city attorney and add language on designees, and promised follow‑up on copyright and whether the ordinance needs to address the flag specifically.
