Student advisory members who attended the CASB conference proposed a district student collaboration council and a social-media transparency plan to strengthen connections between students and the Board of Education and increase avenues for student input into district decisions.
Students who attended the Colorado Association of School Boards conference urged the Board of Education to expand student–board communication and recommended two concrete initiatives: a district student collaboration council and a refreshed social-media strategy to improve transparency and give students regular opportunities to provide feedback.
Students described the proposed district student collaboration council as a structured forum with representation from each school (proposed: up to eight representatives per school drawn from student council, leadership or principal advisory groups), meeting quarterly and bringing school-level issues to the district level. "We want to propose different initiatives to kind of motivate students to become interactive within our school district," student Ketsia (speaker 25) said, outlining proposals to increase transparency around board goals, spotlight student achievements and create designated feedback opportunities.
Students also recommended a social-media action plan to make board goals, updates and opportunities more accessible to high-school-aged students without replacing school-level accounts. District staff indicated students already receive a board update summary and that the superintendent's advisory council will continue discussions; the superintendent's office committed to follow-up in superintendent advisory meetings and forthcoming board retreat conversations.
