District reports staffing gains in instructional assistants and flags safety, proposes more training time

The board received a staffing update showing a net increase in full-time-equivalent positions compared with the prior year and a targeted hiring push for instructional assistants serving students with higher needs.
Tony, the HR presenter, said the district now reports about 411 FTE compared with 396 last year and has added positions, notably several instructional assistants in special education. He explained that FTE and "number of bodies" differ and that some positions are split across buildings. He also described the district's process for building-by-building staffing reviews and noted schools where enrollment changes prompted careful monitoring.
Tony and Marissa Franklin described concerns about a rise in safety incidents involving students and staff. Tony said he convened instructional assistants to collect their experiences and that the district is developing steps for safety and security, more planning time for IAs and stronger collaboration with teachers. "Anything we can do to help provide relief for that is going to be a benefit in the long run," he said of the proposed supports.
The HR team said they may recommend adding up to two paid days at the start of the year for classified staff to ensure mandated trainings and safety planning occur, and they are planning further spring bargaining discussions with employee groups. The board welcomed the staffing detail and thanked HR staff for transparency and thoroughness.
