School committee approves robotics, ski and chorus travel requests

The Walpole School Committee approved three separate student travel requests after presentations from program coordinators.

Brian Gaffey, the high‑school robotics coordinator, asked for permission for the robotics team to attend competitions including an upcoming event at the University of Rhode Island and the possibility of a world championship if the team qualifies. Gaffey said the team typically has "about 35 to 40 students" and builds a roughly 120‑pound robot for competition.

The committee moved and approved the robotics out‑of‑state requests (motion by Mr. Green; second by Ms. Hazards).

High‑school teacher Matt Tavares sought approval for a ski‑club trip to Pat's Peak on March 21. Tavares said the trip has group discounts for parties over 15 and the goal is to fill a full bus; the committee approved the request (motion moved and seconded on the record).

Kendra Nutting, the choral director, requested approval for three students (Reese Thornton, Suarez Anchatra, and Kayla Jackson) to attend the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Regional Honor Choir in Providence in late February. The committee voted to waive the 30‑day approval requirement and approve the trip (motion by Mr. Buckley; second by Mr. Vane). Nutting described the ACDA process as a virtual audition with high competition and said all three students were accepted.

Votes were recorded by voice; the committee approved each motion without recorded opposition. Committee members praised student initiative and emphasized transportation and logistical planning would be handled by staff.

No district budget appropriation was requested at the time of these approvals; staff will follow up with trip paperwork and any necessary waivers.
