Indian Head Park honors Corporal Martin Milas with life‑saving award

Indian Head Park — The Village Board recognized Corporal Martin Milas on Feb. 12 with a life‑saving award for his actions on Jan. 17.
Chief Walsh read the award citation, saying, "On 01/17/2026, Corporal Milas demonstrated exceptional presence of mind and selfless dedication by swiftly responding to a victim of a motor vehicle crash near I‑294 in Wolf Road. At approximately 3AM, officer [sic] located a single vehicle crash where the driver was ejected from the wreckage. Corporal Milas rushed to the scene and identified that the semi‑conscious victim's head was submerged underwater. Corporal Milas waded into the near freezing water ... and lifted a person's head up until the fire department arrived and rendered aid."
Board members and attendees congratulated Milas and his family, who were invited forward for photos during the presentation. Chief Walsh and President Amy Jo Wittenberg praised Milas’ decisive actions and said the award reflects the highest ideals of the Indian Head Park Police Department.
The recognition was ceremonial; no board action or ordinance accompanied the award.
