Murrieta expands military banner program to include veterans; May installations and July retirements planned

Otis said the city shifted installations to once per year in May (banners remain up for roughly one year) and expanded eligibility in 2024 to accept veteran banners in addition to active‑duty banners. She reported that the program received 24 veteran banner applications to date and that winter installs included 10 active‑duty and 10 veteran banners; staff plan to install another 10 active‑duty and six veteran banners prior to Memorial Day this year.
The program now features a "military banner hall of fame" on the city website so families and deployed active‑duty honorees can view banners online. Otis described an annual retirement ceremony that presents taken‑down banners to honorees or family members; staff plan to hold the next retirement presentation on July 19.
Commissioners asked operational questions (pole capacity, website display, timing) and suggested moving some banners into Town Square if hardware and pole types allow. Otis said the city currently uses 29 poles (double‑sided installations bring capacity to nearly 60 banners) along the Kalmia–Ivy corridor and is considering additional locations if demand continues to grow.
