Council recognizes Yom HaShoah; B'nai B'rith and community groups present names and prayers

Councilmember Jackie Goldberg introduced a memorial observance for Yom HaShoah. Representatives from B'nai B'rith—Steven Koff and Mark Joseph—along with survivors and community leaders read names and offered prayers in remembrance of Holocaust victims.
Saul Berger, a Holocaust survivor and member of B'nai B'rith, read names of relatives lost during the Holocaust. Gwen Baldwin, representing the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, read names of victims from the gay and lesbian community and noted that many were persecuted and killed during the Nazi regime. Speakers emphasized the importance of remembrance and connected the observance to contemporary concerns, mentioning atrocities then occurring in Kosovo.
Councilmembers participated in the observance and the council accepted a memorial scroll in recognition of Yom HaShoah 1999.
