Kiski Area SD to host Gold Star wrestling match honoring 23 service members

Kiski Area School District Superintendent Doctor Lohr told the Board of Directors that the district will host a Gold Star wrestling match to honor U.S. service members killed in action. "By Wednesday evening, we'll be honoring 23 heroes," Doctor Lohr said, and added the event will share the stories of the fallen and visibly support their families.

Doctor Lohr said the event is being sponsored by the Association of the United States Army and that organizers had arranged advertising at local VFW posts and on social media to publicize the evening. He named Representative Joe Cooper and Representative Abby Major as confirmed attendees. "We're sending some stuff out tomorrow on social media," he said, urging board members and the community to attend.

Student representatives also referenced the event in their reports: a student noted the match would occur during the school day on Thursday, January 15 for some activities and reiterated the community and student involvement planned around the event.

The superintendent described the match as both a remembrance and an opportunity to connect students, families and veterans. He said the district will honor the unit's history and noted that, in one related remembrance, a Scud missile attack near Greensburg resulted in heavy casualties decades earlier.

The board did not take formal action on the item during the meeting; Doctor Lohr asked members to adjust schedules so they could attend. The district intends to provide event details and materials to the public via its usual communications channels.
