Board policy chair urges 'welcoming schools' guidance after DHS change

Policy committee chair Miss Lau asked the board to pursue a 'welcoming schools' policy and administrative training so staff can distinguish judicial warrants from administrative actions after a federal policy change; the proposal will go to committee for research and drafting.
At the Jan. 27 meeting Miss Lau (Speaker 9), as policy committee chair, recommended the district consider adopting a "welcoming schools" policy in response to the Department of Homeland Security's rescission of a prior guidance limiting ICE enforcement in certain designated places. Lau said the committee will research model policies and bring recommendations back to the board.
"Given everything that's going on in our country right now, it really would be prudent for our district to not just reaffirm the constitutional rights of all of our students," Lau said, urging that administrative protocols and training be developed so staff can distinguish judicial warrants (which are enforceable on school property) from administrative warrants.
Lau said the committee is already seeking examples and assistance from staff and expects to present options to the full board for consideration early this year. The item will proceed through the policy committee for drafting and review before any formal board action.
The discussion was placed alongside regular committee updates on curriculum, facilities and finance; no formal policy action was taken at the Jan. 27 meeting.
