Augusta— The City Council on Tuesday approved a proclamation recognizing "Augusta Celebrates America 250" and authorized city staff to distribute a community events calendar in the utility mailer and to hang and store veterans' banners organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Jamie Martin, representing the Augusta Celebrates America committee, told council the committee has organized six focus areas for June events including veterans, youth, businesses, downtown, a ministerial alliance, historical panels and arts programming. Martin asked the city to help publicize the calendar by including a one-page flyer with utility bills and to support a veterans' banner program by hanging, taking down and storing banners to be displayed in May and November and returned to families after two years.
City staff estimated the one-page utility mailer would cost roughly $400–$450 to print and mail to about 4,000 households (about 9 cents each). Councilmember (speaker S8) moved to authorize city staff to include the calendar in the utility mailer and to hang the requested banners; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Mayor read portions of a proclamation declaring that the city recognizes and supports the 250th anniversary observances and encouraging residents, organizations and businesses to participate.
Council members praised the committee's plan and discussed outreach channels the committee plans to use, including school communications, social media and a potential event website with a QR code. Martin said flyers and a tentative calendar have been provided to council and that the DAR will manage banner sales and veteran information but asked the city to install and store them.
The council did not appropriate new funding for the events at the meeting; it authorized the limited use of an existing utility mailer for community outreach and accepted responsibility to hang and store banners as requested.
