KANKAKEE, Ill. ' Building and Code Safety Committee members on Feb. 19 reviewed January permitting data and questioned a permit listed as a "pole barn" at 604 North 5th Avenue.
Unidentified Speaker 4 reported 52 permits in January totaling $150,176.30 in fees, and noted that seven commercial permits accounted for $133,229.79 of that amount. "We have a total of 52 permits and all, in the amount of fees of a $150,176.30 for 52," the meeting facilitator said.
Committee members examined a permit described as a pole barn near the PSI property and railroad tracks and said it looks more like a commercial steel building. Speakers noted that such projects typically require planning review and conditional-use or special-permit approval. "I mean, by my assessment a true commercial building ... it's not technically what we think of as a pole barn," one unidentified committee member said when describing the structure visible from North 5th Avenue.
The committee did not take action on the permit at the Feb. 19 meeting; members said they will confirm whether the proper planning approvals were obtained and will follow the standard conditional-use process if required.
