State Board proclaims March for Gifted students and SEL Week; accepts $25,000 donation for Katzenbach School

The New Jersey State Board of Education on Feb. 25 adopted two ceremonial resolutions and accepted a charitable gift.
The board unanimously recognized March as Gifted and Talented Students Month, invoking the Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Act (signed 01/13/2020). Jeanette Pena read the resolution and the board voted aye. Representatives from the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children urged continued efforts to close gaps in identification, increase equitable services, and consider enhanced teacher preparation for gifted instruction.
The board also unanimously adopted a resolution designating March 2025 as Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Week. Board member Bennett read the resolution; Elizabeth (Betsy) Ginsburg, representing SEL4NJ and the Garden State Coalition of Schools, accepted the resolution and credited departmental staff and a gubernatorial proclamation for advancing SEL work.
Separately, the board accepted a $25,000 donation from Valerie Amendoloro to support student activities at the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf. The primary motion to accept the gift was recorded as made by Ahmed Shehada and seconded by Jeanette Pena; the motion carried unanimously.
All three items were ceremonial or philanthropic: neither resolution invoked new regulatory requirements and the donation was accepted for student activities. The board scheduled additional public comment and related rule discussions for April and May where appropriate.
