Williamston board advances policy updates including acceptable AI use, booster group registration and textbook adoption

At its Feb. 2 meeting, the Williamston Community Schools board reviewed and acted on a package of policy changes covering curriculum adoption, technology and external support group procedures.
The policy committee noted updated Policy 73.50 (Textbook Adoption) and an acceptable-use policy for generative AI (Policy 73.75). The packet also contained revisions to technology acceptable-use language and an update to dual enrollment/ concurrent enrollment (Policy 80.41) clarifying how certain external credits count toward district caps.
Separately, staff described a new, simpler registration and acknowledgement form for booster and support groups that will create a paper trail for external groups that support the district. Superintendent staff said groups will be asked to provide proof of legal formation, an EIN and a separate bank account; a 501(c)(3) designation is not required. The superintendent said the district expects a summer/fall rollout to avoid overly intrusive procedures.
The board voted to remove several older policies (including district vehicle idling, personnel records duplicates, interscholastic athletics items, field trip and extracurricular trip policies, and motorized vehicle use) and approved additions for bus inspections, personnel files and payroll information, extracurricular activities, and field trip guidance. The motions passed unanimously on roll call.
Board members said the goal is to modernize policy language, reduce unnecessary intrusiveness for volunteer organizations, and align handbook language for students and staff.
