Willis ISD board waives Jan. 26 makeup day, approves pay for staff kept home by storm

Travis Utech, a district staff member who presented the recommendation, told the board the district considered the compensation “a public purpose and a benefit to the Willis Independent School District” and cited Texas Education Code section 45.105 C. "We find that a public purpose and a benefit to the Willis Independent School District exists by increasing morale, decreasing absence of the makeup days, and reducing employee turnover," Utech said.
An unidentified board member moved to accept what the motion described as "the superintendent's recommendation to waive the missed work date on January 26, 2026, of district employees directed not to report for inclement weather conditions and pay full compensation to those indicated employees." The transcript does not record a named second. The chair asked for a show of hands; the chair then said, "All in favor." No roll-call tally or individual votes are recorded in the transcript.
The board's action follows an explanation that staff missed workdays on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, because of inclement weather and that compensating affected employees would support morale and retention, according to the presentation. The motion and the board's acceptance were recorded in open session; the only legal citation provided in the meeting transcript was Texas Education Code section 45.105 C.
The chair also announced the next regular board meeting will be Feb. 11, beginning at 5:30 PM following a public meeting that starts at 5:00 PM. The meeting was then discontinued.
