Board approves purchase of excavator and heavy-duty trailer for fuels-reduction projects

The board authorized two grant-supported purchases to support county fuels-reduction and fuel-production projects: a 17-ton excavator with attachments, extended warranty and maintenance package procured off a cooperative purchasing agreement (approximately $398,976.07), and a Landoll traveling-axle tilt-bed trailer (about $114,324.28) to transport heavy equipment.
Procurement staff said the excavator will be used on identified fuel-reduction projects and that the county will establish an MOU with CAL FIRE under which CAL FIRE operators will operate and maintain the machine during project work. The equipment will remain county property after grant project completion; staff suggested housing the machine at a CAL FIRE facility near the project for logistical and maintenance reasons during the initial two-year grant project period.
The trailer was selected for its 50,000-pound payload capacity and onboard hydraulic features to simplify transport of heavy machinery. Staff explained operator training is included in the purchase, and a delivery and training schedule will be coordinated with public works and CAL FIRE.
Supervisors approved both purchases and authorized the county administrative officer to execute the procurement documents.
