Sheriff's Office awarded roughly $277,000 for DUI enforcement under cannabis-tax fund

The Lassen County Sheriff's Office received notification of a California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund grant award of approximately $277,000 for a one-year cycle to support DUI enforcement and related training.
Captain Mike Carney said the funds will be used to outfit a patrol vehicle, purchase drug-testing machines and pay for officer training to detect impaired drivers. The budget includes 10 saturated patrol deployments across the county during the grant period, with a sergeant and three deputies assigned to each deployment; the sheriff's office also plans DUI checkpoints in partnership with the CHP.
Because the funding stream originates from Proposition 64 cannabis taxes, local agencies apply through CHP processes. Carney said the county applied in February and recently received approval. The board adopted the resolution accepting the funds and authorized the sheriff's office to proceed.
