Oak Lawn swears in new police lieutenant and sergeant as Division Chief Pat Kern retires

Two members of the Oak Lawn Police Department were sworn in at the Jan. 27 Board of Trustees meeting as the department recognized long-serving Division Chief Pat Kern’s retirement after 28 years.
Police Chief (unidentified) introduced the promotions and credited Division Chief Pat Kern for leading technology and operational efforts in the department, saying Kern was “the reason that we’re doing these promotions” as part of his retirement recognition. Steve Skanal was promoted to patrol sergeant after 18 years with the department, including assignments in patrol and the tech division. Nick Kumpke (recorded in the sworn statement as Nicholas/Cumpkin in the transcript) was appointed police lieutenant after 20 years of service, with experience in patrol, detective work and as assistant team commander of the mutual aid response team.
Both officers recited the oath to support the U.S. Constitution and the Illinois Constitution and pledged to faithfully discharge the duties of their new positions. Families and colleagues were acknowledged during the brief ceremony, and photos were taken onstage.
The board did not take additional action on staffing or compensation during the public meeting; the promotions were presented as informational and ceremonial business at the start of the session.
