The New Jersey State Board of Education adopted a resolution recognizing January 2026 as School Board Recognition Month and heard remarks from association leaders before presenting annual awards.
Dr. Claudine Keenan read the resolution that thanks more than 5,000 local school board members and charter trustees for their volunteer service, and the board voted to accept the resolution by voice vote.
Association leaders then presented awards: Dr. Raymond A. Gonzales was introduced as New Jersey’s 2026 Superintendent of the Year; the New Jersey Association of School Administrators highlighted his district’s $225,000,000 bond referendum and districtwide initiatives. Cori Lowell was recognized as School Business Administrator of the Year, and NJPSA presented Gisela Castro Ciancia and Tony Catani as Visionary Principals at the elementary and secondary levels, respectively.
Separately, the board accepted donated funds — $50 and $100 from named donors — for student activities at the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf; staff member Kathy Ewing was noted as present to answer questions.
