Washington County supervisors approve equipment purchases, courthouse change order, appointments and a resolution

Procurement and capital projects: The board awarded an unsealed bid to Fleet Genius of NC Inc. for six 30-yard rectangular roll-off containers at $5,589 per unit, a total of $33,534. Ms. Alicia Sturgill of the solid waste department told the board only one responsive bid was received; the board approved the award and a budget transfer to cover the purchase.
The board also approved a $131,249.11 change order for the courthouse remodel to finish an overflow courtroom and related spaces. County staff said the work would be paid from existing contingencies and identified labor savings, and the board voted to authorize the change order.
Appointments and resolutions: Bill Tamplin was appointed to a four-year term on the Washington County Public Library Board of Trustees (Madison District). The board reappointed Ken Taylor to the Washington County Service Authority. Supervisors also approved Resolution 2024-22 to request that the Virginia Office of Emergency Management allow Green Springs Volunteer Fire Department to resume first-response duties effective July 1.
Sheriff procurement and financing: The board addressed a sheriff's office equipment purchase for which the vendor required a stronger guarantee. The sheriff is prepared to provide the $179,240 from the traffic enforcement fund up front if the board commits to treating that amount as an obligated carryover and repaying it in September. The board agreed by motion to allow that arrangement.
Land option extension and holiday: The board approved an extension of the Lapis option agreement to Oct. 31, 2024, to allow time for environmental study, appraisal and survey work. Supervisors also voted to give county employees July 5 off following notice that state courts will be closed.
