Board approves courthouse change orders for AV upgrades and chiller replacement; project remains under budget

Washington County supervisors on Aug. 27 approved two change orders for the courthouse project to cover AV equipment overages and to replace a leaking chiller.
County staff said change order 37 relates to audiovisual equipment that exceeded the $150,000 allowance in the contract; staff reported an additional needed amount of $101,109.39 and said that overage will be covered by savings in the Burwell contract. Change order 39 addresses a leaking 30-year-old chiller; staff requested $276,301.33 to replace it, to be paid from the project contingency the board set aside with the contractor.
"Change order 37 is Burwell's money; change order 39 is your money," staff explained, adding that even with both change orders the project still showed significant savings.
Supervisor Pennington moved and Supervisor Ball seconded approval of both change orders; the board voted 7–0 to approve the requests.
Staff said the chiller replacement and recent AV work, plus earlier modifications to courtroom finishes, should address prior humidity problems in the old courthouse areas.
The board approved the change orders to keep the project moving toward final completion with the updated equipment and systems.
