Plainview ISD board approves 2026–27 instructional calendar

The Plainview ISD Board approved the district's recommended 2026–27 instructional calendar at the Feb. 19 meeting following a presentation of the development process and community voting.
Assistant Carrasco described a multi-stage process that included EIC and SLT input, two draft calendars and an employee vote (322 participants; Version 1: 62.7%). The proposed calendar lists an Aug. 12 start and May 27 end, 181 teacher contract days with at least 165 instructional days required by the district's status as a district of innovation, and a total of 75,970 minutes that leaves roughly 370 minutes as a cushion. The draft includes one built-in bad-weather day and scheduling adjustments around state assessment windows.
Board members discussed voter turnout among staff and the tradeoffs other districts have tested (including four-day school weeks), then approved the calendar 6–0. Administration will publish the calendar and proceed with operational planning, including staff development days and student schedules.
The board also asked for follow-up on voting participation and staffing implications for year-round employees who typically do not participate in the staff calendar vote.
