City launches 'Build Hutch' program to help residents develop small housing and commercial projects

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — City staff announced a new program, "Build Hutch," designed to help local residents and small-scale developers move housing and commercial-project ideas toward realization.
Dave Sotelo, director of strategic growth, said Build Hutch is funded through a community-foundation grant and is intended as a yearlong offering that connects participants to coaching, financing education, zoning and permitting guidance and a local network of lenders and contractors. "Through this process participants will learn step by step process for small housing and infill projects, understand financing zoning permitting requirements, receive coaching on real project ideas," Sotelo said.
Sotelo invited the public to a launch event Monday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall and encouraged attendees to register in advance on the city's event page (hudgensonsks.gov/buildhutch). He said the program is aimed at prospective property owners, contractors and residents who want to rehab houses, convert upper floors in downtown buildings or otherwise invest locally.
