Panel approves bill requiring up to 10 excused days for student participants in sanctioned activities

The Senate Education Committee voted to forward a brief bill that would require local school districts to adopt a policy allowing excused absences of up to 10 days for students in good academic standing who participate in authorized interscholastic activities.
Research director Donna Barton said the bill also amends an existing code section to require that students participating in career and technical student organization activities be in good academic standing. The bill was moved for a favorable report and approved by the committee.
Sponsors said the measure responds to cases where students who traveled for sanctioned agricultural or leadership events did not receive excused absences upon return and that the change clarifies consistent district-level practice.
