Maxwell Academy students and teachers presented examples of student agency, a fifth-grade exhibition on vaping and new middle-years enrichment offerings including knitting, cooking and robotics.
Maxwell Academy took center stage at the Duarte Unified Board meeting with student presentations and teacher descriptions of how the school fosters student agency.
Dean Schwed introduced the spotlight and invited staff and students to share classroom practices that emphasize voice, choice and responsibility. Teacher Rose Alvarado described early-childhood centers and student-driven learning for TK students. Fifth-grade students presented an exhibition on the health risks of vaping and invited the public to the fifth-grade exhibition on May 20. "This is my exhibition group, and we're gonna talk about vaping," one student said as the group outlined harms and cessation strategies.
Middle-years enrichment offerings were highlighted, including a knitting and crocheting class taught by Tanya Bachman where students make headbands, blankets and other items while also developing perseverance and collaborative skills. Eighth-grade students presented a community project aimed at improving children's reading skills; they described plans to build a mini library and to host a community showcase on May 12.
Board members and the student board representative praised the students’ work. Trustees said the presentations illustrated soft skills—agency, advocacy and resiliency—that complement academic performance.
The spotlight concluded with a photo opportunity and a short recess. Staff invited community members and board members to attend upcoming showcases and noted opportunities to expand successful programs.
