Senate committee advances resolution honoring U.S. Postal Service's 250th anniversary

The interim Senate Committee on Veterans, Emergency Management, Federal and World Affairs on Feb. 3 voted to report Senate Committee Resolution 201 to the full Senate with a "be adopted" recommendation. The resolution recognizes the U.S. Postal Service on its 250th anniversary and honors postal employees for their service.

Vice Chair Thatcher moved to report SCR 201 to the Senate floor with a "be adopted" recommendation; the motion was seconded by voice and carried. Committee members spoke in support during the work session, highlighting the Postal Service’s historical role and its workforce diversity. One senator said, "I think it's amazing how much we take the United States Postal Service for granted," and said the resolution merited passage.

During discussion another senator called attention to the resolution’s whereas clauses and cited workforce figures contained in those clauses—including that women comprise a substantial share of the Postal Service workforce, that tens of thousands of postal workers are veterans, and that thousands of employees have disabilities—and encouraged colleagues to read the clauses.

A roll call recorded these votes: Senator Meade — Aye; Senator Murrow Nissland — Aye; Senator Brock Smith — Excused; Vice Chair Thatcher — Aye; Chair Manning — Aye. The committee recorded four ayes and one excused and reported SCR 201 to the Senate floor with a "be adopted" recommendation. Vice Chair Thatcher agreed to carry the resolution to the chamber.

Staff told the committee that the resolution carries no fiscal or revenue impact and that supporting documents are posted on OLIS. The committee closed its work session on SCR 201 and adjourned for the day.
